My WoW Clone Class: Priest (WoW)

Welcome to the overview of the Priest class!

This is an in-depth look into how the Priest class might be designed if it existed in My WoW Clone. You’ll find a great deal of relevant information pertaining to the class’s core mechanics, class abilities, specialization abilities, and customization options. If you are familiar with the class of the same name from World of Warcraft, you will recognize some abilities and talents. However, everything that has been put into this version of the Priest has been retuned to suit the concept of My WoW Clone. So expect to see quite a few changes to elements you recognize, and an assortment of new elements that don’t (or wouldn’t) exist in World of Warcraft.

As the My WoW Clone blog series progresses, and ideas are introduced and fleshed out, the information here will be updated accordingly.

If you have any questions you would like to ask about the information that follows, leave a comment or contact me directly via my Contact page.

Mana, Faith and Madness

In my WoW-Clone, the Priest makes use of two major resources. The first is called Mana, which is common among spell casters. The second resource is called Faith, the source of the Priest’s true power. The third resource, which becomes available to Shadow Priests, is called Madness, and it is a dark version of Faith.

Mana

Priests make use of Mana for the majority of their spells. While the use of damage abilities is only a drain on this resource over long periods, the use of healing abilities can make quick work of the Priest’s resources.

  • Maximum Mana: 500
  • Mana Regen: 5 per sec

Faith and Madness

Priests utilize a resource called Faith to power some of their most powerful spells. Faith is generated by casting spells that consume Mana such as those that deal damage. There are a few healing spells that can generate Faith, but it is not as reliable. There are some Priests who have become corrupted, which has caused their Faith to transform into Madness. This Madness functions similarly to Faith, but it powers magic born from the darkness.

Author Note
Madness was originally intended to be Shadow Orbs. After the announcement of Insanity for Shadow Priests, I saw an opportunity to do something different with my version of the class. I still wanted to design a builder/spender resource mechanic for the Priest, because it would make the class more compelling to play than it has ever been, but I didn’t want the resource to exist just for the sole DPS specialization. So, I created Faith (formerly Holy Orbs) as the antithesis of Madness. It acts as the primary class resource unless a player is using Shadow Form. Additionally, Faith replaces the Serendipity mechanic (as seen in Legion) for the Holy Priests, which didn’t feel like a very good mechanic.

  • Maximum Faith: 100

Shadow Talents

These are the talents available to the Shadow Priest. The purpose of these talents is to provide choices that have an impact on how the class plays. The base spells for the specialization have a heavy focus on burst damage than might be possible in World of Warcraft, but there are options to place greater emphasis on periodic damage if it is desired.

Tier 2 Talents (Level 10)

  • Mind Flay
X Mana per sec, 40 yd range, 3 sec channel
Assault an enemy’s mind, dealing X Shadow damage and generating 5 Madness every sec. The movement speed of the target is reduced by 30%. Replaces Smite while in Shadow Form.

Tier 9 Talents (Level 45)

  • Sanity Consumption
(Passive) Vampiric Touch generates 3 Madness when it deals periodic damage. Using a spell that consumes Madness causes the periodic damage from Vampiric Touch, Shadow Word: Pain, and Void Fire to generate 100% more Madness for 6 sec.
  • Surge of Darkness
(Passive) Critical Hits with Smite, Mind Flay, Mind Blast, Punishment, and Shadow Word: Death generate 50% more Madness.
  • Insanity
(Passive) While in combat, you gain a stack of Insanity every sec. Mind Blast generates 3 stacks of Insanity. Insanity generates 1 Madness every 3 sec, per stack. Using a spell that consumes Madness will consume all stacks of Insanity. Insanity lasts 6 sec, and stacks up to 20 times.

Tier 10 Talents (Level 50)

  • Void Entropy
100 Madness, 40 yd range, Instant cast
An enemy becomes enshrouded by void energy, suffering X Shadow damage every 3 sec. Lasts 60 sec. If Smite, Mind Flay, or Mind Blast deals damage to this enemy, the periodic damage of any Vampiric Touch, Void Fire, and Shadow Word: Pain effects on the target will be triggered. Damaging this enemy with Shadow Word: Obliterate will refresh the duration of Void Entropy.
  • Void Form
(Passive) When you reach 100 Madness, you become enveloped in void energy which empowers your Shadow Form. While Void Form is active, all Shadow damage is increased by an additional 30%, Mind Blast is instant cast, and Shadow Word: Obliterate and Shadow Crash do not consume Madness but each has a 15 sec cooldown. Void Form rapidly consumes Madness, and the rate of consumption increases steadily over time. Casting Shadow Word: Obliterate will pause the drain of Madness for 5 sec. Void Form ends once all Madness has been consumed.
  • Shadowy Apparitions
(Passive) The Priest has a 1% chance per point of Madness spent to conjure a Shadowy Apparition for 30 sec. The Shadowy Apparition attacks the Priest’s primary target (or focus), mimicking all offensive spell casts, but only dealing 30% of normal damage. After a Shadowy Apparition fades, it will float to its last target, deal X Shadow damage, and generate 10 Madness.

Discipline Abilities and Talents

In this section, you will find the abilities and talents available to the Discipline specialization. While this spec is presently incomplete, you can tell that I am borrowing the Atonement concept being implemented for the Legion expansion. It is one of the few good ideas the WoW development team has had in years, and it makes the Discipline specialization unique from every other healer in the game.

Discipline Abilities

  • Atonement (Level 10)
(Passive) Plea, Flash Heal, Power Word: Shield, and Renew apply Atonement to the target for 20 sec. Allies affected by Atonement are healed for 50% of any spell damage done by the Priest. This healing is not affected by Healing Power.
  • Spiritual Healing (Level 10)
(Passive) The Priest’s Healing Power is now increased by 100% of Power from equipped weapons, and 50% of total Spirit.
  • Penance (Level 10)
X Mana per sec, 40 yd range, 2 sec channel, 10 sec cooldown
Launch a volley of holy light at an enemy, dealing X Holy damage and generating 10 Faith every sec.
  • Plea (Level 10)
X Mana, 40 yd range, Instant cast
Send a small bolt of light to an ally, restoring X health.

Discipline Talents

[Not yet implemented.]

Holy Abilities and Talents

In this section, you will find the abilities and talents available to the Holy specialization. This is an incomplete spec, but if you’re expecting it to be your typical healer that plays the UI mini-game. You’re probably right. Then again, that’s all the World of Warcraft development team is good at creating. Why else would they have waited until Legion to try something completely different with one of their healers (that one being Discipline)? I’m not saying pure-healing casters are bad or shouldn’t exist, but it is boring that all the healers are barely different from each other mechanically.

Holy Abilities

  • Spiritual Healing (Level 10)
(Passive) The Priest’s Healing Power is now increased by 100% of Power from equipped weapons, and 50% of total Spirit.
  • Holy Word: Serenity (Level 10)
50 Faith, 40 yard range, Instant cast
Release intense healing energy into an ally, restoring X health.

Holy Talents

Class Glyphs

These are the first set of Glyphs I have created for the “My WoW Clone” blog series. The intention here is to create an assortment of passive effects that enhance the core mechanics gained through the Talent tree. Currently, many of these Glyphs are designed for the Shadow Priest, because that was the first specialization to be flesh out.

  • Lingering Harm
The duration of Holy Word: Harm and Holy Fire is increased by 9 sec. Also affects Shadow Word: Pain, Void Fire, and Vampiric Touch.
  • Persistent Renewal
The healing of Renew is increased by 30%, and its duration is increased by 6 sec. Also affects Shadow Mend.
  • That Burning Feeling
Holy Fire is now instant cast, and its periodic damage is increased by 30%. Also affects Void Fire.
  • Echo of Power
Direct damage spells deal an additional 20% damage over 6 sec. Additional hits from these spells will empower the effect of Echo of Power.
  • Echo of Light
Direct healing spells heal for an additional 20% over 6 sec. Additional hits from these spells will empower the effect of Echo of Light.
  • Void Ray
Each time Mind Flay deals damage, its damage is increased by 10%, stacking up to 6 times. Lasts 6 sec.
  • Vampiric Feast
Vampiric Embrace also heals nearby allies for 50% of the healing done by Vampiric Touch.
  • Extra Shielding
Power Word: Shield generates an additional 50% Absorption over 6 sec.
  • Death Spreads
Cascade, Halo, and Shadow Crash spread the Vampiric Touch, Shadow Word: Pain, and Void Fire effects from the initial target to every other damaged enemy.
  • Empowered Obliteration
Shadow Word: Obliterate consumes all Madness when cast, and its damage is increased by 3% per additional point of Madness consumed.
  • Power Conservation
(exclusive: Faith and Madness) Reduces the cost of Faith consuming abilities by 20%. Also affects Madness consuming abilities.
  • Power Devotion
(exclusive: Faith and Madness) Increases your maximum Faith by 25. Also affects the Madness resource.
  • Harmful Smite
(exclusive: Smite) The damage done by Smite is increased by 15% for each periodic damage effect on the target.
  • Mental Smite
(exclusive: Smite) Mental Anguish also increases the critical hit chance of Smite and Punishment by 30%.
  • Death Comes Quicker
Shadow Word: Death can now be used at any time, but its damage is reduced to 25% of normal against enemies above 80% health. Additionally, it will generate 10 Madness when it deals damage and the target doesn’t die.
  • Mastermind
Power Word: Fortitude is transformed into the Mind Quickening spell. This spell infuses an ally with mental quickness, increasing its Haste by 10%. Lasts 60 min. If the target is in your party or raid, all party and raid members will be affected.
  • Recharged Mind
(exclusive: Mind Blast) Shadow Word: Obliterate and Punishment restore one ability charge of Mind Blast.
  • Mindbender
Shadow Fiend no longer has a cooldown, but it now costs 25 Madness to cast. Dealing damage with Vampiric Touch extends the duration of active Shadow Fiends by 0.5 sec.

Changelog

The following is a list of noteable changes to the above information

  • APR 19, 2016: Modified how Mental Anguish stacks are earned.
    • Mental Anguish (Old Version)
(Passive) Mind Blast generates 3 stacks of Mental Anguish. Mental Anguish causes the damage of the next Smite, Death Nova, or Punishment cast within 10 sec to be increased by 30%. Can generate up to 5 stacks.
