Greetings, ladies and gentlemen! How is your week going?
So, in the wake of the news surrounding The Elder Scrolls Online going Buy-to-Play, I thought it would be a good opportunity to pose a question regarding the game as a whole. Before I reveal what that question is, I want to say that this thought has been burning in my brain since the game was first announced. The concept of making The Elder Scrolls into an MMORPG has always confused me because I was expecting Bethesda to take a different approach to the series. I wasn’t confused because I thought the series would make a bad MMORPG, but, due to my assumption, a single question kept repeating in my head:

Today, we’re going to talk about Ant-Man. I know what you’re probably thinking; there are already numerous other posts discussing the new Ant-Man trailer, the good and the bad, and providing insights about the film that can be extracted from the two-minute trailer. While there are a few bits from the trailer that I enjoyed (mostly the actual Ant-Man action bits), this post will not be discussing the trailer. Instead, I’m going to cover an idea that has been rattling in my head since the casting of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. Greetings, ladies and gentlemen, and Merry Year of Newness!
As we start off a new year, one cannot help but contemplate the past, examine the present and daydream (or nightmare) about what may come in the future. One might contemplate plans made in a prior year that never came to fruition, or projects begun that were left unfinished. These could include any number of things such as finding a job, starting a blog, writing a novel for NaNoWriMo, beating that newly purchased game, or binge watching TableTop. The examination comes from realizing the progress that has been made on these various projects and how one might move forward to achieving completion. The obvious answer would be to just get them finished, but that is often easier said than done. For me, there are numerous projects just waiting to be completed, or started in some cases, and the first of those on my list this year is this blog.
This blog is a project that I’ve been meaning to start for a couple years. The idea of having a slice of the internet where I can express my (often numerous) thoughts has always had a certain appeal to me. I have had some fun with my Tumblr account and that has been around for at least two years. I believe my biggest issue with getting this project started, other than the waves of distractions and detractions, was deciding upon a good opening post. I’ve written out a list of topics I thought would be fun to write about, so I have no shortage of ideas, but none of them felt like good introductory posts. As the year 2015 grew closer, I began to examine the progress (or lack thereof) I had made on projects I had in mind. Thus, I was inspired to write this post. I will endeavor to post regularly; at least once a week. We’ll see how that goes.
Another project that lies ahead of me this year is the creation of my first official game using the development platform RPG Maker VX Ace. Technically, it might be the second game that I’ve made because I once created a game for my girlfriend that featured her as the protagonist, and the core gameplay involved her favorite part of videogames (collecting the monies) in order to progress to the end. This time around my focus will be put into a project that is comparatively much larger in scale than my previous one. I’ve experimented with this platform a lot, written a few different game concepts and stories, and I think it’s time to just make one. In future posts, I’ll discuss my plans, a few ideas and provide updates regarding any progress that has been made. Stay tuned.
When I’m not working on projects or dealing with the outside world (shudders), my time will be spent playing one of my new games or within an MMORPG. This includes Dragon Age: Inquisition; a game that I have played for roughly 20 hours between two characters. The second character, however, is merely a recreation of the first and holds the most significant chunk of my time played. During my first play through, once I completed the initial portion of the game and reached Haven, I realized something awful about my first character: he too closely resembled Kris Kringle from the 1970 stop-motion TV movie “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town”. As a result of becoming disturbed by the mental images of my character howling “Ho, Ho, Ho!” as he waded into battle, I decided to terminate War Fist Claus and start again.
In addition to playing video games, building a video game and blogging, I am going to be testing out a tabletop roleplaying game that I have been developing since the fall of last year. I’ve spent several weeks fleshing out the rules and the basic concept of game flow, the next step would be to create the first set of game pieces to begin the first wave of alpha testing. I have this dream of seeing my game played on Wil Wheaton’s TableTop show on YouTube. It might sound like a crazy dream, but I like the structure of the show, and it is a really good platform for showcasing new and old games. One of my best friends is pretty eager to play the game as well (I’ve probably talked his hear off telling him about it), and is positive that we could create a rather impressive game that could top any game he has seen played on the show. In any case, it will be fun to finally play a few rounds of a game that I designed myself.
